Statement from DA International Chair Marth McDevitt-Pugh on House Passage of Trump's Big Bad Billionaire Tax Break:
Today Republicans have broken yet another promise to the American people by pushing Trump’s big bad billionaire tax break through the House. After campaigning on cutting costs for working Americans, they showed their hand by voting to slash programs which benefit everyday Americans in order to extend trillions in tax cuts to the wealthiest 1%.
They voted to rip healthcare away from more than 13.7 million Americans by 2034, by cutting $700 billion from Medicaid. Hospitals will close, seniors won’t get the care they need, and premiums will skyrocket.
They voted to de-fund Planned Parenthood, which provides healthcare to millions of women.
They voted to remove food assistance from 11 million Americans - 4 million of whom are children, by slashing $276 billion from the SNAP.
They voted to raise energy prices and destroy the burgeoning clean energy manufacturing industry, even as the climate crisis worsens.
And they did all this just as Trump’s tariff tantrums are increasing prices and Americans are struggling to make ends meet.
It was not to balance the budget - no, this budget will balloon the deficit to $3.8 trillion by 2034.
It was to fund prisons and deportations and provide a massive tax break for Trump’ s billionaire friends.
This budget is not only bad policy, it’s cruel & destructive. It is the most massive transfer of wealth from the poorest Americans to the wealthiest in nation’s our history. And it cannot stand.
It now goes to the Senate where we will fight tooth and nail to defend America and Americans from this theft.
