Statement from DA International Chair Marth McDevitt-Pugh on the political violence in Minnesota:
“Only a few weeks ago on Memorial Day, State Representative Melissa Hortman posted to her Instagram ‘Today we honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. May we work each day to build a nation worthy of their courage and sacrifice.’
I am shocked and saddened to now have Rep. Hortman amongst that brave group, along with her husband, Mark. There is simply no place for political violence in America, and our hearts are with their loved ones, and with Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, as they recover from this targeted attack.
These were not random acts of violence. The President’s continued use of inflammatory rhetoric has contributed to a dangerous climate where threats, intimidation and deadly force are becoming all too common. This administration’s attempts to silence and punish those who disagree with them are unconstitutional and morally wrong.
We will not be silenced, and we will not be intimidated.
Minnesota's state motto is 'L'etoile du Nord' which means North Star. It's the star navigators use to guide them forward. In the face of this unspeakable loss, we reaffirm our commitment to being guided by the values that Minnesota Rep. Hortman stood for — equity, service, and an unshakeable belief in a better future. We will continue her fight.”
