Democrats Abroad forcefully condemns Donald Trump’s announcement that he will sign an executive order banning all mail-in voting nationwide. This is an unconstitutional power grab that the President has no authority to make.
It's also an existential threat to overseas voters. For millions of Americans abroad, including civilians, service members and military families, mail-in ballots are often the only way our votes can be counted. Eliminating mail-in voting would silence us almost entirely.
Coming just days after Trump’s closed-door meeting with Vladimir Putin, where Trump repeated his debunked lie that mail-in ballots “rigged” the 2020 election, this move is the latest in a dangerous pattern of attempts to undermine free and fair elections.
"Let us be clear: elections belong to the people, not the President. Trump’s executive order is nothing more than an authoritarian attempt to seize control of our election systems, strip away one of the safest and most accessible ways to vote, and lay the groundwork for voter suppression in 2026. We must do all we can to encourage our elected leaders to do their part and protect our vote! The time is now, and I urge us all to step up to the moment," said Martha McDevitt-Pugh, International Chair of Democrats Abroad.
