Democrats Abroad Delegation readies to attend Democratic Convention in Chicago

DEMOCRATS ABROAD DELEGATION TO VOTE FOR VP KAMALA HARRIS THIS WEEK, IN HISTORIC VOTE

Delegation also readies to attend Democratic Convention in Chicago

This week, the Democrats Abroad (DA) delegation will vote in the virtual roll call to nominate Vice President Kamala Harris to be the nominee of the Democratic Party for President – and, come November, to break the highest glass ceiling in the world. The delegation will continue on to Chicago to represent DA at the Democratic National Convention from August 19-22 and continue to build momentum towards the election.

The 27 member DA delegation is led by International Chair Martha McDevitt-Pugh. It consists of 13 ‘at-large’ delegates, who were elected by the broader DA membership to vote for the Presidential nominee. Members of the delegation include staff and ‘automatic delegates’ elected by DA members to serve four-year terms as members of the Democratic National Committee (DNC). Per DNC procedures, the ‘at-large’ delegates vote on the first round ballot for presidential candidate. Because VP Harris is the only candidate who has qualified for the ballot, the ‘automatic delegates’ will also be allowed to vote on the first ballot. Voting will begin on August 1 and close on August 5.

Chair McDevitt-Pugh said: “I am honored to be leading this incredible delegation of leaders from across the world to Chicago to elect Kamala Harris to be the next President of the USA, and for Democrats up and down the ballot. At the same time we’ll be able to elect the first woman president, against the MAGA Republican agenda, and for expanded rights and opportunity for all Americans. This is a truly historic inflection point and I am humbled to be a part of it.”

Reflective of the incredible political moment we’re in, the DA delegation is historically diverse and representative of America and Americans who live outside of the USA. The delegation consists of 3 African Americans, an Hispanic American, 2 Asian American Pacific Islanders, 8 LGBTQ+ Americans, 6 youth, 4 members with disabilities, and 5 who are either veterans or come from military families.

Delegation members live in 16 countries around the world and vote in 19 states in the USA. This includes 8 battleground states, where these votes can be especially important. In close races, votes from abroad can make the critical difference, such as in Georgia and Arizona in 2020, when overseas ballots ensured that those states went for Biden-Harris.
