How to Vote from South Africa 2026

Your Guide to Voting from South Africa

Update: April 2026

This is a critical election year with Special Elections and Primaries throughout the year, leading up to the Midterms with all 435 House Seats, about 1/3 of the Senate, and state and local elections across the country. Our democracy is at stake and your vote matters!

If you're a U.S. citizen or dual citizen abroad, who will be 18 on or before election dates, or 3 November 2026 for the Midterms, you have the right to vote from abroad.

🇺🇸 Make sure you’re registered and ready to vote from abroad in 2026.🇺🇸

Request Your Ballots

Protect your vote: submitting your FPCA (Federal Post Card Application) every year registers you as a voter living abroad, requests all eligible ballots and helps guard against voter roll purges. Exercise your rights - start at VotefromAbroad.org

IMPORTANT: Each state has different rules, timeframes and processes.  Please check your state-specific information now at www.votefromabroad.org/states and plan. Follow your state’s timeframes and procedures carefully to ensure your 2026 votes count!

Tips for completing your FPCA (ballot request):

  • Use your last residence in the US or your parents’ address
  • If you have never lived in the US but are eligible to vote, click here  https://www.fvap.gov/citizen-voter/reside
  • Make sure to fill in all sections
  • Selecting “Intend to return” will provide you with access to the full ballot (state and federal). For more info see Filling out the Federal Post Card Application
  • Ensure you provide a South African address and a phone number
  • Select “Receive absentee ballot by email” and ensure your email address is clear
  • Make sure you have signed the FPCA (they will compare this signature with the one on your ballot) and follow the instructions to submit it.

Important Dates

There are Primaries and Special Elections throughout the year.

For November Midterms:

19 Sept

Ballot Day - Absentee ballots should be received by email 45 days ahead of federal elections (if requested prior to this date)

19 Sept – 6 Oct

Vote! Complete & return your ballot early to ensure it arrives safely.

29 Sept

Drop-off deadline for voters from mail-in / postal states who wish to use the diplomatic pouch service of the US Consulates in Cape Town, Durban or Joburg.

6 Oct

Strongly suggested deadline for all voters to submit their ballots. Some states allow for last minute voting electronically, but let’s play it safe!

Tips for Completing Your Ballot

  • You will receive your ballot or instructions on how to access it by email. If you’ve requested your ballot but don’t see it in your email (by 23 Sept) – first check your spam folder– it will come from your local election official. Contact them if you can’t find it.
  • Follow the instructions for your ballot carefully and completely!
  • Ensure your handwriting is legible.
  • Make sure you sign and date your ballot. Sign the form with the same signature you used on your absentee ballot application

Returning Your Ballots From South Africa

📌 Always vote and return your ballot as soon as possible, by the fastest method allowed for your state! 📌

Ballot return methods — by email/online, fax or postal mail — vary by state. Find your state's ballot return methods here.

Electronic Ballot Return

If your state allows you to email, upload online, or fax your ballot, please use one of these methods and avoid postal mail delays and costs.

If you vote in Alaska, California, Florida, Louisiana, or Oklahoma, you can return a ballot by fax or an email to fax service (but not by email).

Postal Mail Ballot Return

Some states require that ballots be returned by postal mail — see directions that come with your ballot on how to return it, or look up the rules for your state here. Many states have extended deadlines for postal mail ballot return but we urge you to plan to have your ballot back by election day if at all possible. Always vote and return your ballot right away, allowing enough time for your ballot to arrive. See below for details on methods of returning a ballot by postal mail.

Vote a Backup Ballot!

All voters abroad are urged to vote their ballot promptly and to return it right away. If your state requires that you return a ballot by postal mail, consider also voting a Backup Ballot (the Federal Write-in Absentee Ballot or FWAB). The Backup Ballot is available only to overseas voters — think of it as insurance for your vote! If both ballots arrive, only one will be counted. For more guidance on the Backup Ballot, go here.

South Africa & International Post

Please DO NOT use regular international post from South Africa. As you likely know, we do not generally use postal mail in South Africa. Our main options for “mail-in” return are either using the Consulate Diplomatic Pouch (5 weeks in advance) or courier. If your state allows an electronic option, please use that.

Using the US Consulate Diplomatic Pouch

US Consulates in South Africa allow U.S. citizens abroad to access diplomatic mail for the return of U.S. election materials. Diplomatic mail is part of the U.S. Postal Service — therefore, it is necessary to use either sufficient U.S. postage (U.S. stamps), OR to use an official election mail “US postage-paid” envelope. See: I Need to Return my FPCA or Ballot by Mail, What Are My Options?

Consulates recommend allowing at least 30 days for your election mail to arrive in the US. Actual delivery times will vary.  Don’t forget to request a consular postmark.

US Consulates in South Africa can send ballots to the US in their Diplomatic Pouch but it takes time and when the ballots reach the US they then travel by US Postal Service so they require postage and the complete process can take several weeks – we highly suggest the drop-off deadline of Tuesday 29 September.  NOTE: South Africa celebrates Heritage Day on Thursday 24 September 2026 so Consulates will be closed.

  • Follow your ballot instructions carefully!
  • You can print postage-paid envelopes HERE
  • Friends may have stamps to share
  • If sending back more than one ballot via the diplomatic bag - close and seal each ballot separately. Drop off individually sealed ballots in pre-paid postage envelopes or with a US postage stamp (domestic postage) at your local Consulate (by Sept 29 for the Midterms).
  • If you hope to mail your overseas absentee ballot from within the US, please contact your Local Election Officer to confirm that it will be accepted. All states have different rules. In some states it is illegal for anyone else to handle your ballot.

U.S. Consulate General Cape Town

2 Reddam Avenue, Steenberg Estate, Westlake, Cape Town

Consulate regular business hours: Monday – Thursday: 8:00 to 5:00 p.m.; Friday: 8:00 to 12:00

**NOTE FROM The Consulate in Cape Town: "We’ve put out ballot boxes in the Consular and Main Entrances at the U.S. Consulate General on Reddam Avenue. If you drop off ballots during normal business hours, then you can drop off the ballot personally at the Consular entrance.  However, we can accept your ballots afterhours/weekends/holidays at our Main entrance. You might need to explain to the guards on duty that you want to drop off the ballot. There’s a ballot box in both entrances, to ensure that your vote is counted.

Our preference is that folks drop off during business hours at the Consular entrance but understand that that not all voters live in Cape Town and can get here during those times. So we’re doing our best to ensure that all votes are counted…Cape Town has special envelopes already franked for postage."

Member tip: Showing your US passport to security may give you parking closer to the entrance.

International Express Courier (DHL, FedEx, UPS, etc.)

Tips for using a courier:

  • We recommend arranging courier delivery so your ballot is received by Election Day. All states that require postal mail return have confirmed they will accept ballots sent with such couriers.
  • We suggest sending it at least 10 days before any election and to be on the safe side by October 13thfor the Midterms (don’t wait till it’s late!)
  • If sending back more than one ballot by courier to the same local officials- close and seal each ballot separately. Then put all into the courier envelope.
  • You must ask for a postmark or date stamp to be placed on the outer envelope.
  • Do not require a signature upon delivery as this may prevent it from being delivered.
  • Couriers will not deliver mail to P.O. Boxes — check with your election officials to get a deliverable address for courier mail. You can look up your Local Election Official’s contact details on your state page on Vote From Abroad.

Confirm Your Ballot Is Accepted

After you have returned your ballot, confirm with your election officials that it was received and will be counted. Go to VotefromAbroad.org/states, select your state, and scroll down to “Track My Ballot.” You can also lookup your local election official contact info to directly follow up with them.
