Rick writes: "I volunteer with Democrats Abroad and have attended most of the annual global meetings since 2014. I also have friends from grad school days, whom I’ve long wanted to visit, in both Kenya and Zambia. So I jumped at the chance to attend DA’s AGM in Nairobi at the end of May. This would be my first trip south of the Sahara.

"I flew to Nairobi; traveled by train to Mombasa; then ferry to Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam (Tanzania); then over a day southwest on the Tanzara train; then south by (terrible!) roads through Malawi; east through a corner of Mozambique to Harare (Zimbabwe); and buses to Lusaka (Zambia). Then I flew north to Entebbe (Uganda); took a bus to Kampala and later to Kasese (my favorite place); then south to Kigali (Rwanda); and finally flew back to Nairobi.

"After the AGM I met my Kenyan friend’s family who welcomed me with a big cake and Masai shawls for me and my wife.

"Both trips were limited to 45 days because of our household insurance. I’ll go through both trips quickly and share pictures along the way."
