ON TYRANNY is a short, readable book that describes unflinchingly the authoritarian threat to democracy. In this work Timothy Snyder describes the current rise of authoritarianism in the United States and its parallel with the rise of fascism in 20th century Europe.
Snyder’s twenty lessons detail how authoritarianism finds a foothold in democratic countries, but also the practical ways we can resist and reverse that threat. Our study will explore the twenty lessons that Snyder presents as a framework for understanding the rise of fascism. We will discuss how these lessons provide practical tools for strengthening our resistance to these threats to our democracy, and share personal and community strategies with each other.
Timothy Snyder currently holds the inaugural Chair in Modern European History at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Toronto.
