    DA Toronto 2020 AGM & Co-vice Chair Election

    Dear DA Canada Toronto Chapter Members:

    This is Notice of AGM & Election 2020, with the Meeting to be held on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm EST before the debates. We will be electing a new co-Vice Chair for the 2020-2021 term and then all hang out and watch the debates after at the bar!

    What: ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2020

    Purpose: To inform you about the year’s activities and the accomplishments of the chapter plus elect a Co-Vice-Chair for the 2020-2021 term. 

    The AGM agenda will include the following:

    1. Approval of the Agenda
    2. Vote for new Co-Vice Chair
    3. Approval of March 2019 AGM Minutes
    4. Treasurer’s Report
    5. Report on 2019 Events
    6. Future Scheduled Events
    7. Announcement of Election Results

    When: TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2020 | 6:00 – 7:30 pm EST

    Where: In-person at Watson's at 388 Richmond Street, which is right near the intersection with Spadina. You can get there on the Spadina streetcar.     Who: All Members of Democrats Abroad Canada - Toronto Chapter

    How: For Members who will participate via a video conferencing system, you will receive information by email if you complete this form.  Otherwise, come meet us at in person and stay to watch the debate after.

    Voting:

    • Ballots will be emailed to members on February 11, 2020. Submit your completed electronic ballot by 12:00 AM EST February 25, 2020.
    • Or mail your ballot to: DACTO Teller of Elections, 71 Charles St E, Suite 802, Toronto, ON, M4Y2T3. Ballots must arrive by February 25, 2020 to be counted.
    • To vote you must have joined Democrats Abroad by 11:59 PM EST February 10, 2020, you must be a member of DACA, a US citizen of voting age and a resident of Canada assigned to the Toronto Chapter.

    Feb 25 Debate Watch Party in Mississauga!

    Join Democrats Abroad Toronto-Peel Region! to watch the first Democratic Primary Debate of 2020.  This will be one of many 2020 events for the members of the Toronto Chapter-  geared toward those of us in the West GTA. We'll be gathering an hour before the debate starts to chat and have some food, and then sticking around to watch the candidates.  

    Representatives from all campaigns are welcome to attend to speak to members about the campaigns.

    Join Democrats Abroad Toronto members to watch the last Democratic Presidential Primary before Super Tuesday.  It's bound to be exciting!

    We will be having our AGM first from 6-7:30 and then staying to watch the debates from 8 pm on at Watson's, which is at Richmond and Spadina.  You can get there on the Spadina Streetcar.  Watson's is Bring Your Own Food, which means you can bring anything you like to eat or order from a number of yummy places in the area. Check out this list for ideas.

    Downtown Toronto Global Presidential Primary Voting - Day 1

    The Democrats Abroad Global Presidential Primary runs from March 3 to March 10, 2020. Democrats Abroad will send delegates to the Democratic National Convention this July who reflect the results of the primary. 

    If you are a member of Democrats Abroad Canada, on March 3, 2020, you can vote in person at the East of Brunswick Pub, which is at the corner of Bloor and Spadina near the Spadina TTC station.  The accessible entrance is through the main building lobby.  Can't wait to see you at the polls!

    Important details:

    • Primary Voters must meet the following criteria to vote
      • Be abroad and be a U.S. Citizen
      • Be a member of Democrats Abroad
      • Be 18 as of November 3, 2020
      • Not have voted, or plan to vote, in any other 2020 state presidential primary

    Options for planning travel to the DPCA
    2020 Global Convention in Toronto, Canada May 15th – 17th

    Air Canada is the Official Canadian Airline for the global convention and is offering a discount for convention attendees on Air Canada and code-share flights on the Star Alliance

    There are two international airports served by Air Canada in Toronto. If you're travelling from the Northeastern US consider the Billy Bishop Airport. It's located on an island off downtown Toronto providing a much shorter transit to either housing option.

    Lodging

    There are two lodging options available to book. The hotel option is the Chelsea Hotel, Toronto offering a rate of $189 CAD single/double, and is an 8-minute walk to the MaRS Discovery District [meeting venue]. There is also a dorm room option located on two floors at the University of Toronto, with rates of $50 CAD single / $70 CAD double. The 45 Willcocks Residences are approximately a 15-minute walk to the MaRS Discovery District, with transit options available.

    Chelsea Hotel, Toronto

    As Canada's largest hotel with 1,590 guest rooms, the Chelsea Hotel, Toronto, is centrally located and just steps from the city's best shopping districts, world-class theatres, vibrant nightlife and exciting attractions. A full-service urban resort, the Chelsea Hotel has room types to suit everyone and the hotel offers 3 restaurants and lounges, separate adult and family recreation areas and pools – including the "Corkscrew" - downtown Toronto's only indoor waterslide. As a premier family destination, the hotel offers a full range of services including the Family Fun Zone with Camp Chelsea, Kid Centre and Club 33 Teen Lounge.

    DPCA has negotiated a nightly rate of $189 CAD single/double, plus taxes, currently at 13%. The Chelsea Hotel is an 8-minute walk to the MaRS Discovery District.

    University of Toronto New College Residence
    45 Willcocks Street, Toronto, ON

    A number of rooms are currently on hold for participants of the Democrats Abroad Global Convention 2020 at the New College Residence in 45 Willcocks Residence – a great dormitory residence at the University of Toronto on the St. George campus in downtown Toronto.

    Conference Rate: $50/night for single rooms and $70/night in double rooms. Included is linen and pillow, a small towel, wired and wifi access (bring your own Ethernet chord for wired internet access). Common rooms and washrooms are down the hall from the rooms. Double rooms have two single beds in them. Taxes are currently 13%.

    • Toronto Transit Commission [TTC] – Offers subway, bus, and streetcar transit throughout Toronto, including Union Station. Access a route planning map if you’re staying elsewhere from the two official lodging locations.
    • Toronto Bike Share – Offers access to 5,000 bikes at 465 stations across 100 sq km of the city. Purchase 1 day/3 day passes online.
