Posted by Isabel Liu January 20, 2026
On Tuesday Feb 24 we'll meet on Zoom to discusss Outclassed: How the Left Lost the Working Class and How to Win Them Back by Joan C. Williams.
Williams demonstrates how working-class values reflect working-class lives. Whether you are a concerned citizen committed to saving democracy or a politician or social justice warrior in need of messaging advice, Outclassed offers concrete guidance on how liberals can forge a multi-racial cross-class coalition capable of delivering on progressive goals.
Williams is an award-winning scholar of social inequality. Author of White Working Class, she is Distinguished Professor of Law and Hastings Foundation Chair (emerita) at UC College of the Law, San Francisco.
A rousing roadmap
—The Nation
The book is filled with wonderful details about the things elites simply don't understand about working people.
— Financial Times
Williams gets it. She patiently addresses many of the self-serving delusions that keep the college educated "Brahmin left" from understanding their fellow citizens. This book will be a service not only for that elite group, but for anyone who finds it hard to understand what on earth is happening in American politics.
— Jonathan Haidt, The Anxious Generation
At 7:30pm we'll discuss the book for 45 minutes, then discuss current events for 30 minutes, finishing at 8:45pm. All are welcome, even if you haven't read the book. RSVP here to receive the Zoom link, book discusssion questions, and current events newsletter.
