Melissa Schmalz

Volunteer Manager, BC Mainland Chapter

I bring a leadership style grounded in interpersonal connection and mutual support to Democrats Abroad. I believe effective participation requires thoughtful systems that allow volunteers to step into leadership, step back when needed, and sustain their involvement through self-care and connection with others.

My interest in politics comes from generations of familial military service and civic engagement. I’ve seen how public policy, war, and social movements ripple through families and communities, shaping identity, belonging, and purpose. These experiences inspire my commitment to social justice and fairness.

By profession, I work as a clinical counsellor with over 15 years of experience in community-based services and private practice. I approach my work with a social justice lens, and view vulnerability as a source of insight and strength.  I strive to create environments in both counselling and leadership that honor this perspective, foster resilience, and promote participation.

Volunteer Manager for Democrats Abroad BC Mainland; Oregon Voter; Clinical Counsellor, Elizabeth Fry Society and Leo Street Youth and Family Services; Private Practitioner, Waves Counselling and Psychotherapy.
