A Call to Protect the Lives of U.S. Citizens and Our Democracy

Democrats Abroad mourns the loss of six U.S. servicemembers and other innocent civilians killed as a result of the Trump administration’s unauthorized military actions. Our thoughts are with their families and with the civilians caught in the aftermath of deliberate attacks in the Middle East and the Americas.

These military actions were undertaken without a Congressional declaration of war or authorization for the use of military force (AUMF). Democrats Abroad calls on Congress to exercise its constitutional authority and act to stop these unauthorized wars by directing the President to withdraw forces where no such authorization exists. Congress should bring the War Powers Resolution to a vote without delay.

Just eight days ago, during his State of the Union address, President Trump stated that “the first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens.” Yet at that time, planning for attacks in the Middle East and Central America was already underway—without a plan to protect the U.S. citizens who live, work, and travel throughout these regions.

Democrats Abroad is closely monitoring the situation and remains in contact with members in affected areas. Americans overseas are encouraged to enroll in the U.S. State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive official updates and guidance. Those in affected regions should follow the advice of local authorities and monitor communications from their nearest U.S. embassy.

Even in difficult moments, Americans across the United States continue to stand up for democracy. Recent election results—including a 28-point Democratic victory in Arkansas and additional Democratic gains in Pennsylvania and Maine—demonstrate that voters remain committed to defending democratic values and institutions.

As the official Democratic Party organization representing Americans living outside the United States, Democrats Abroad remains committed to supporting our members around the world and advocating for policies that protect Americans at home and abroad.
