The Threat to Our Rule of Law

The Trump administration's recent deployment of National Guard troops and federal takeover of the Washington, D.C. police department represents a troubling escalation of executive power. Citing a crime emergency, the administration has placed local law enforcement under federal control, a move that local officials and crime statistics contradict. Mayor Muriel Bowser and the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department have stated that violent crime in the city is at a 30-year low. This unilateral action, taken over the objections of local leaders, raises serious concerns about the separation of powers and the principle of local governance enshrined in our Constitution

This is not the first time the administration has used military and federal forces for domestic policing. Similar deployments have occurred during racial justice protests. By invoking a public safety "emergency" without clear justification and centralizing law enforcement authority, the administration is eroding the distinction between the military and civilian police, a cornerstone of our democratic republic. This move can be seen as an attempt to assert federal power over local and state authority, setting a dangerous precedent for the future of our institutions.

Call to Action

Democrats Abroad Italy members, your voice is more important than ever. We must stand up for our Constitution and democratic norms. We urge you to contact your members of Congress and demand they address this overreach of executive power. Tell them you are concerned about the militarization of our domestic police force and the subversion of local governance. This is not about party politics; it is about protecting the rule of law.

How to contact your representatives:
