Statement on Trump’s Racist Post

U.S. citizens the world over have traditionally expected our leaders to lead with integrity, grace, and dignity. Donald Trump's continued disregard for these standards, not to mention a basic degree of respect and decency, was on display when he posted a degrading and offensive AI image of former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama. Mr. Trump has since stated that the post was not a mistake, making clear that it was a deliberate act.

Democrats Abroad calls on the White House to issue a formal apology to the Obamas and the nation. The harm and indignity of this act are especially acute given that it occurred during Black History Month, a time dedicated to honoring the contributions, leadership, and lived experiences of Black Americans. His post stands in direct opposition to the values this month represents.

As Americans living abroad, Democrats Abroad are acutely aware of how such behavior reverberates beyond U.S. borders. Conduct like this undermines confidence in American leadership and damages the country’s standing in the global community.

Democrats Abroad remains committed to upholding democratic norms, respectful discourse, and the values of equality and dignity for all. We believe the United States must be represented by leaders who reflect those principles, at home and around the world.
