Statement on Trump Tariffs

Donald Trump’s new tariffs on Canada do not protect American workers, consumers, or the United States. Instead, they raise costs for hardworking people in both the United States and Canada while serving his political and personal financial interests.

The United States and Canada share one of the closest trading relationships in the world. Each year, the two countries trade about $872 billion in goods and services. New tariffs put that trade at risk and can raise costs for U.S. manufacturers, businesses, and consumers.

Today, many products are made across several countries. Parts and materials may cross borders up to 8 times before a product reaches the buyer. Tariffs make each step more expensive. Those added costs are often passed on to consumers through higher prices. They can also put jobs, businesses, and our economic security at risk.

Democrats Abroad condemns these tariffs. They do not make the United States stronger. They damage our relationship with one of our closest neighbors, raise costs for American families, and put U.S. jobs and businesses at risk.
