The Republican National Committee is suing Arizona to block overseas Arizonans from voting, specifically targeting the adult children of Arizona families who’ve lived their whole lives abroad.
They’re going after a long-standing law that lets U.S. citizens vote from overseas using their parent’s Arizona address, even if they’ve never lived in the U.S. The reason? Because Americans abroad tend to vote for Democrats, and the RNC wants to silence us.
If the Republican party succeeds, thousands of Arizonans abroad could lose their right to vote — and you can bet they’ll try the same tactic in other states as well.
This is a direct attack on Arizona families and part of a broader assault on the voting rights of all U.S. citizens abroad. We need to speak out, loudly and urgently, and push back against this unconstitutional challenge.
Below we have call scripts, social media outreach suggestions and a call for letters to the editor. If you're from Arizona, we particularly suggest you call local lawmakers and consider writing a letter to the editor. If you're not, we strongly suggest highlighting the case in social media.
TAKE ACTION
1️⃣Call Arizona Lawmakers
Let them know this attack is unacceptable. Tell Republicans to drop the lawsuit—and tell Democrats to defend our voting rights.
📞 Script for Republican Leaders
Who to call:
- Speaker Ben Toma: +1 (602) 926-3298 | [email protected]
- Senate President Warren Petersen: +1 (602) 926-4136 | [email protected]
Script if you're from Arizona:
Hi, my name is [NAME], and I’m a U.S. citizen living abroad. I vote in Arizona and I'm calling to strongly oppose the RNC's lawsuit trying to strip Arizonan families abroad of their right to vote. By doing so the RNC is attempting to strip our families of our heritage and our fundamental right to have a voice, all because Republicans are afraid we'll vote against their candidates.
I call on you, [NAME], to push back against the RNC, to represent ALL of your constituents and their families, and support Secretary of State Adrian Fontes as he fights for the rights of voters. Thank you.
Script if you're not from Arizona:

📞 Script for Democratic Leaders
Who to call:
- Governor Katie Hobbs: +1 (602) 542-4331
- Secretary of State Adrian Fontes: +1 (602) 542-4919
Script if you're from Arizona:
Hi, my name is [NAME], and I’m a U.S. citizen living abroad who votes in Arizona.
Thank you for defending voting rights in our state. I urge you to continue fighting the RNC’s attempt to disenfranchise overseas voters—especially those who have never lived in the U.S. but are U.S. citizens and have a constitutional right to vote.
This matters to military families, dual nationals, and young voters across the globe. Please don’t back down.
Calling State Legislators Matters!
-
State legislators, secretaries of state, and state attorney generals often receive far fewer calls than federal officials. A few dozen well-placed calls can be enough to get noticed—and sometimes change minds.
- Hearing directly from voters, especially veterans, military families, students abroad, or people with deep ties to the state, helps disrupt the talking point that overseas voters are "illegitimate voters."
2️⃣Expose the Attackers
Everyone can help spotlight the people behind this anti-democratic lawsuit. Take to social media and call them out publicly for trying to take away the rights of U.S. citizens. Use the call script above to help with your messaging.
Who’s behind it:
- RNC – @GOP
- AZ Republican Party – @AZGOP
- AZ GOP Chair Gina Swoboda - @GinaSwoboda named plaintiff on the complaint
Use hashtags like:
#USCitizensAbroadDeservetoVote #HandsOffMyVote #MyVoteMyVoice
3️⃣ Write a Letter to the Press
Are you an Arizona voter abroad—or the parent of one?
Write a letter to the editor and share your story about why this lawsuit is a direct attack on your rights. Letters from impacted voters are powerful.
Need help writing it?
Reach out to our Press Team at [email protected] and we’ll help you shape your letter. And if you are an Arizonan abroad and want to make a video to share, please get in touch - we’d love to help you with it too!
Let’s make sure the Republicans know: overseas voters will not be silenced.
