Stop Trump’s Passport Rollback on Trans Rights

From day one, the Trump administration has relentlessly attacked LGBTQ+ rights—rolling back protections, banning trans people from the military, and now, trying to erase our identities from official documents. Their latest move targets Americans who identify as transgender and non-binary by eliminating their control over their gender identity shown in their US passport, stripping away the ability to have identification that reflects their true selves.

The proposed changes would:

  • Eliminate the "X" gender marker on U.S. passports, removing an option previously available to non-binary and gender non-conforming individuals
  • Create delays or impose unwanted changes to a person’s gender marker when applying for or renewing a passport.

The State Department has opened a public comment period on these changes, which runs till March 17th. We must flood the public record with opposition before it’s too late.

Tell the State Department to reject these harmful changes. Click on each link below, then click the green “SUBMIT A PUBLIC COMMENT” button at the top of each page.

Below is an example statement:

My name is Amy, I am originally from Illinois and I have lived in The Netherlands for twelve years. While I am a proud American, I have come to appreciate the virtues of tolerance and pragmatism in Dutch culture. I am writing to you now as a concerned citizen and ally of the transgender community regarding the recent executive order, "Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government." This policy mandates that government-issued identification documents, including passports, reflect the holder’s sex assigned at birth.

This Executive Order will be devastating to a small, and already marginalized population of Americans. Many transgender people face significant challenges and discrimination in their daily lives. It could even bring harm to them – the act of crossing into another country with a passport that doesn’t reflect their gender accurately could put them at risk.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. I trust that you will consider my request with the thoughtfulness and care that it deserves.
