Roe vs. Wade Under Assault! What can we do?

We are living in troubling times. Climate change is causing havoc on both U.S. coasts, the U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan and the subsequent Taliban take over, the ongoing Covid pandemic and, now, the troubling and unbelievable lack of action by the Supreme Court in regards to the Texas abortion ban. While many are already worryingly predicting the end of Roe vs. Wade, I prefer to feel that all is not lost.

Many factors have led the U.S. to this moment, including years of chipping away at women’s reproductive rights. And now, at this moment, the lasting effects of the Trump Administration have managed to haunt us in the form of a Supreme Court ruling handed down by, among others, three Trump-nominated Justices.  As Sonia Sotomayor wrote in her dissent: “Last night, the Court silently acquiesced in a State’s enactment of a law that flouts nearly 50 years of federal precedents.”  If you would like to gain some insightful background on how all of this came about, I highly recommend Heather Cox Richardson’s September 1, 2 and 3Letters from an American.’

What can be done? While ranting and raging seem like good options, they aren’t terribly helpful or productive. So, after you’ve finished frustratedly pulling out your hair, I recommend the following links from the Democrats Abroad Global Women’s Caucus for ideas on actions that can be taken.

  • Check out groups like NARAL Pro-Choice America and take a look at their many actions in the fight for reproductive freedoms, including the right to access abortion. https://www.prochoiceamerica.org
