Tell Your Senators How the SAVE America Act Would Impact You

Update: March 18 -The Senate is currently debating the so-called “SAVE America” Act. That debate is likely to run throughout the week, with senators speaking on the floor about the bill and offering amendments.

To support their resistance, Democratic senators need stories from Americans whose right to vote would be affected. Your story could help them explain the real-world consequences of this bill while they are on the floor, and push back against Republican claims that it protects democracy.

Why this matters

The anti-voter “SAVE America Act” keeps the worst provisions of the original SAVE Act and makes them even more extreme.

The SAVE America Act would require voters to provide proof of citizenship in person in the U.S. when registering to vote. Voters would also be required to present proof of citizenship along with an approved photo ID when registering to vote and when casting a ballot.

For millions of Americans abroad, that requirement could make it far harder, or impossible, to register and vote from overseas.

Take Action Now

Call your senators and ask them to oppose the SAVE Act and protect your voting rights and the voting rights of all Americans living and working overseas.

If you have a Democratic senator, share your story and ask that they use it during the Senate debate as an example of why Americans abroad must not lose their right to vote.

Call Script

Hello, my name is [YOUR NAME], and I’m a constituent who votes in [CITY/STATE].

I’m calling to urge Senator [NAME] to oppose the SAVE America Act. As an American living overseas, this bill would make it much harder for me to register and vote from abroad.

Please protect the voting rights of Americans overseas and consider sharing stories like mine during the Senate debate so people understand the real impact of this bill.

If you have a Democratic senator add your story. Make it anecdotal. Possibly emphasize that you see casting your vote as an important part of the democratic process, you might mention how many times you’ve voted from abroad, and how important it is to you to participate. Use language that you would not mind being put on public record.
