DAUK Political Book Club - On Courage by Angwin & Fields-Meyer

On Courage: How to Be a Dissident in an Age of Fear

By Julia Angwin & Ami Fields-Meyer

On Tuesday January 12th, we will meet on Zoom to discuss On Courage: How to Be a Dissident in an Age of Fear by Julia Angwin & Ami Fields-Meyer.

Based on their acclaimed The New Yorker essay “So You Want to Be a Dissident? A Practical Guide to Courage in Trump's Age of Fear,” Angwin and Fields-Meyer deliver a guide to courage in America’s age of fear.

On Courage simplifies the calculus of activism by making more accessible than ever the fundamentals of taking political risk. Blending rich, previously untold narratives with history, spirituality, and movement research, Angwin and Fields-Meyer deliver a highly accessible book full of practical lessons – an inspiring resource for anyone, anywhere, who feel the walls of history closing in on them. On Courage is a roadmap to political courage and a powerful case for how taking personal risks can help save the free world.

Julia Angwin is an American investigative journalist who co-founded and was editor-in-chief of The Markup. She worked at the Wall Street Journal where she was part of a team that won the Pulitzer Prize. She also worked at ProPublica, during which time she was a Pulitzer Prize finalist. She has published three other non-fiction books. Ami Fields-Meyer has been a political advisor to civil rights groups, major philanthropists and high-profile public officials including VP Kamala Harris. He served as a Senior Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Allen Lab for Democracy Renovation.  This is his fist book.

“…an important new contribution to the literature of patriotic dissent.” - Senator Adam Schiff

“This book will make you think and feel differently about what it means to live in this country at this moment and what you are capable of as your country needs you. It will make you feel less alone in the world and less alone in history. It will give you concrete ideas of what you can do right now to help your country. It will make you feel more equipped for whatever is coming next. I couldn't recommend it more highly. . . .” - Rachel Maddow

“At just the moment we need it most, Fields-Meyer and Angwin offer a brilliant roadmap for moral clarity and resolve in profoundly challenging times. On Courage is both a spiritual and practical toolkit and a stirring call to action.” - Sharon Brous, national bestselling author of The Amen Effect and named the #1 most influential rabbi in America by Newsweek

At 7:30pm we will discuss the book for 45 minutes, then discuss current events for 30 minutes, finishing at 8:45pm.  RSVP here to receive the Zoom link and book discussion questions.  Any questions? Contact [email protected]

All are welcome, even if you haven't read the book.  Here is more to complement or substitute for reading the book in a way that fits your schedule.
