DAUK Political Book Club - Stand by Cory Booker

Stand

By Senator Cory Booker

On Tuesday October 6th, we will meet on Zoom to discuss Stand by Cory Booker.  Organised around 10 qualities, including agency, vulnerability, truth, perseverance, and grace, Booker advances a clear thesis. Weaving together powerful stories and stirring personal reflections to remind us that these shared qualities can serve as a North Star to guide us. He argues that our principles are not luxuries; they are vital, strategic keys to our survival and success. By wielding these tools, we can reclaim our sense of common cause and change the course of our country’s history.

Booker was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford and earned his law degree at Yale University. He served as the mayor of Newark, New Jersey from 2006-2013 when he became a US Senator. He ran for President in 2020. In April 2025, he broke the Senate record with a 25-hour speech protesting Trump’s policies. He previously published his autobiography United: Thoughts on Finding Common Ground and Advancing the Common Good.

"An argument for moral principles, for ten virtues [Booker] sees as critical to American life, like agency and patriotism, but also vulnerability and humility."

—NPR's Morning Edition

“Inspiring, moving, and beautifully written, Stand is mandatory reading for all Americans who seek inspiration in a country and world beset by constant crisis.”

"I recommend people read it in these times because [it has] such inspiring stories."
