Donald Trump’s recent behavior has raised urgent alarms across the political spectrum. From threatening catastrophic military action to posting bizarre, self-aggrandizing content and lashing out at global leaders and institutions, his conduct is erratic and dangerous.

The Constitution gives us a solution, but so far, Congress has failed to carry it out.

More than 50 years ago, the 25th Amendment created a process to address presidential incapacity, including a nonpartisan body to help determine when a president can no longer carry out the duties of the office. That body has never been established.

Now, Rep. Jamie Raskin (MD) has introduced legislation to finally create this independent, bipartisan Commission on Presidential Capacity.

This bill is not just messaging. By establishing the commission, it helps prepare the United States in case of real crisis at the highest level of leadership. Without it, there is no clear, credible process in place if a president becomes unable to govern responsibly and his cabinet is unwilling to act.
