This fall, a distinctly American message will appear across Zürich: “Are you a U.S. Citizen? Vote in the 2026 midterm elections!”
From August 31st to October 4th, VotefromAbroad.org will display voter outreach posters in key areas throughout Zürich encouraging Americans living in Switzerland to request their ballots and participate in the upcoming U.S. midterm elections. The Zürich ad campaign is part of a broader voter outreach effort that will also include postcards mailed to U.S. citizens across Switzerland reminding them to request their ballots and vote.
Nearly 32,000 American citizens live permanently in Switzerland, with Zürich home to one of the country’s largest American communities. Americans living overseas retain the right to vote in U.S. federal elections, wherever they live, and many are also eligible to vote in state and local races depending on the laws of their state of voting residence. Yet many Americans living abroad are unsure how to vote or do not realize that they must request a ballot each calendar year in order to vote from overseas.
The Zürich campaign aims to reach those voters in their everyday lives and remind them that their votes matter. Similar campaigns have already been launched in Geneva and Basel.
VoteFromAbroad.org is a nonpartisan voter registration and overseas ballot-request service provided by Democrats Abroad and available to all eligible U.S. citizens overseas, regardless of political affiliation.
As attention turns to the U.S. midterm elections, we thought the Zürich campaign might offer an interesting local angle on a major American political story: the tens of thousands of U.S. citizens living in Switzerland who remain eligible to participate in American elections.
