Welcome to the Democrats Abroad Spain’s LGBTQ+ Caucus!
DA Spain’s LGBTQ+ Caucus was created to increase visibility for Our Community and Allies within the community of Democrats Abroad and to help Americans living abroad register to vote. We strive to ensure that our rights are championed and protected, and host a number of monthly events created to foster community, raise funds, and most importantly, GET OUT THE VOTE!!
In addition to coordinating DA Spain’s efforts with Pride celebrations - Orgullo Gay Manifestaciones - during Pride Month in the summer, DA Spain’s LGBTQ+ Caucus creates a number of events, both in person and online. Our Trivia Night takes place on the second Tuesday of each month and routinely draws a sell-out crowd. Other events include discounted theater performances, online and in-person screenings and talk-backs, exhibitions, house parties, protest organizing, and, of course, flamenco dance lessons.
The LGBTQ+ Caucus also led the charge to launch a functioning, FEC-compliant, Democrats Abroad Merchandise Store. However, while all of the above deliver fun evenings, cool merchandise, and events mounted in the mood and cutting-edge style we are known for, don’t be fooled by our Caucus’s positive, casual, upbeat attitude. We strive to grow a community of like-minded Americans living abroad who are motivated, angry, and passionate to protect our hard-fought-for rights as we face grave challenges and threats to our human rights and dignity. We need to protect our rights to identify as we see fit, condemn hostile attacks on trans people and fight to advance our protections.
Our political right to exist and ability to choose who we love, legally, equally, and under the law, are facing direct attacks by the current administration and the Trump-enabled Supreme Court. Marriage Equality, which has existed in our beloved Spain for almost twenty years, became American federal law ten years ago and is now being threatened at home as of this writing.
To that end, Caucus goals as we roll into the Midterms include retail voter registration, which we are calling Rainbow Registration; several online events, including a fundraising Drag Queen Bingo Zoom event; online sessions with Equality voting groups in battleground states like Florida and Texas, group phone banking house parties, and, of course, more Flamenco and Trivia.
In closing, we want to leave you with some of the poignant online rants that concur with the mood and the feeling of much of our community:
“You can’t tell someone you love them and then vote for someone who will hurt them.”
“May you never know the fear of having your human rights challenged every time there is an election. And may you never know the pain of watching loved ones vote against your right to exist fully, equally, and authentically.”
