The Hamburg and Munich and Southern Bavaria Chapters are playing a little game of musical chairs!
Our book club began in Hamburg, where Jodi Szarko, our original chair, nurtured and developed this wonderful reading group. Jodi has become increasingly busy with her many Hamburg Chapter commitments, so I, Emily Froemel, Chair of Munich and Southern Bavaria, will endeavor to keep our book club going from here.
Since we're a virtual group meeting on Zoom, we thought, why not move a few hundred kilometers south? After all, we each broadcast from our own living spaces, and the conversation travels just as well!
We'll meet on Tuesdays at 6:00 p.m.
Please RSVP, and I'll do my best to send you the Zoom link in a timely manner.
Our new book
We're starting a new adventure with:
End Times Fascism and the Fight for the Living World by Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor
We organize our book club to move slowly through each book, allowing time for in-depth conversation and thoughtful discussion. The goal isn't simply to finish the book, but to explore its ideas together.
Our reading schedule
October 6, 2026: Introduction and Chapter 1 — discussed
October 13, 2026: Chapters 2 & 3 - Part I: Messianic Dreams — discussed
October 20, 2026: Chapters 4 & 5 - Part II: Escaping the Cloud — discussed
October 27, 2026: Chapters 6 & 7 - Part III: Prepper Nation — discussed
November 3, 2026: Chapters 8 & 9 - Part IV: Let's Stay — discussed
November 10, 2026: The Conclusion
We'll also begin choosing our next book. That decision may well be heavily influenced by a certain upcoming vote!
Come join the conversation!
Please take the plunge, read up to the chapter we're discussing, and join us. You don't need to be an expert or have all the answers. Bring your questions, your observations, and your willingness to engage with challenging ideas.
Whether you've been with us since Hamburg or are discovering our book club for the first time, we'd love to have you.
We have decided on a change of material:
I Eat the Stars: How to Live Fully and Beautifully in a Collapsing World
Moving Beyond Doom: Wilson draws on over 200 interviews with philosophers, scientists, game theorists, and spiritual leaders to help readers step past panic and return to their core humanity.
This will be hopefully a nice detour after finishing End of Times. Giving us a little break as things will sherley heat up before they cool down in the US.
Let's keep the pages turning and the conversation going—now from Munich!
All the best,
Emily Froemel Chair, Munich and Southern Bavaria Chapter Democrats Abroad
