Books Abroad - Parable of the Sower

The Democrats Abroad Global Women’s Caucus together with the Environment & Climate Crisis Council and the Black Caucus invite you to join us for our next Books Abroad Feminist reading group on Sunday, May 4, 2025 at 10 AM EDT / 4pm CET to discuss Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler (1947-2006)

Called a “dystopian” novel, Parable of the Sower, written in 1993, is considered a masterpiece of America literature.

The book explores a multitude of themes: Black injustice, women’s rights, global warming and political disparity. Butler describes a world that begins in 2024 and ends in 2027, where fires rage in California and a president named Donner rules over a dysfunctional America. Chaos and violence reign and only the rich and powerful can survive.  Sound familiar? The heroine, Lauren Olamina, envisions a future of a better world.

The discussion will be led by Connie Borde, Sheila Malovany-Chevallier (GWC), Dana Freling (CCC) and Angela Fobbs (BC).
