Please print out your ballot AND all other attachments, then bring those with you to our Voter Assistance Office for help with properly returning your ballot. Assistance is provided on a first-come, first-served basis. No appointment needed.

NOTICE: You must take responsibility for equipping yourself with knowledge and taking the steps necessary to have your vote counted. Voting from abroad can be complicated. There are 50 states, each with different processes, rules, and deadlines to vote in elections from abroad. In some states, these differences vary by county. Democrats Abroad is here to help you navigate the process, but we can’t change federal or state laws to accommodate those who act too late. In other words, we can’t help you if you don’t help yourself.

STEP 1: REQUEST YOUR BALLOT

As an overseas voter, you need to visit VoteFromAbroad.org to request that your ballot be sent to you electronically to vote in the November 3, 2026 general election. You are exempt from completing this online postcard application ONLY IF…

• You are planning to be in the U.S. and vote in-person on November 3, 2026 (or during your state’s early or in-person absentee voting window);

• You completed a printed FPCA postcard, mailed it to your election administrator, AND called your election administrator to confirm receipt and acceptance; or, 

• You vote in California, Colorado, and Washington State, BUT you must check with their local election office if you do not receive your ballot by September 24.

Do NOT use your voting state’s absentee voting system. There is a VERY strong chance that you may not receive your ballot in time to vote, return it, and have it counted.

Do NOT have a family member vote for you using an absentee ballot. This is voter fraud and may result in both you and your family member serving multi-year jail sentences.

Do NOT use a forwarding address in Laredo for voting. Do NOT use the address of a family member or friend as your voting address. Both are examples of voter fraud and could result in you and your family member or friend serving a multi-year prison sentence.

ONLY use the last place where you lived as your voting location. This may not be the same address as the place where you last voted from.

ONLY request that your ballot be sent to you electronically (email/online). Do NOT request that your ballot be mailed or faxed to you, as doing so can create unnecessary complications to voting from abroad.

Be sure to provide a forwarding or mailing address when prompted. Some states may send a postcard or letter to request confirmation of overseas voting. Failure to respond could result in you being removed from the voting rolls.

STEP 2: SUBMIT YOUR BALLOT REQUEST

Follow instructions carefully for submitting your ballot request. Some states allow the application to be sent directly to your election office using the VoteFromAbroad.org online application. Other states require that you print the application and email, fax, or mail it back to your election office. Some states may require accompanying documentation, especially if you are registering to vote.

STEP 3: CALL YOUR ELECTION OFFICE

After you have submitted your request, wait one week for electronic submission (online/email/fax) or 2-3 weeks for mail submission and then call your election office. Ask to speak with the person responsible for managing the overseas voting list. Ask this person to confirm receipt and acceptance of your application to vote from abroad.

In some states and counties, administrators keep separate lists of local and overseas voters. If you talk with an administrator unfamiliar with overseas voting, they may not know how to find your name or may provide you with inaccurate information.

STEP 4: YOUR BALLOT ARRIVES

If you requested your ballot via VoteFromAbroad.org, you should receive your ballot at least 45 days before the November 3, 2026 general election.

If you don’t receive your ballot by September 24, call your local election office. Ask for the person in charge of overseas ballots. Request your ballot be sent to you electronically ASAP.

STEP 5: RETURN YOUR BALLOT

Once you receive your ballot electronically, please print it out along with ALL other attachments, and bring those with you to our Voter Assistance Office for help with properly returning your ballot. Assistance is provided on a first-come, first-served basis. No appointment needed.

It is very important that you follow detailed instructions from your state on how to return your ballot. You cannot trust second-hand information from friends or neighbors because the jurisdiction in which they vote may have different rules and procedures for returning ballots. You must follow the guidelines specific to your voting jurisdictions, otherwise your ballot could be discarded. Some jurisdictions allow ballots to be returned by email or via an online upload system, some allow ballots to be faxed back, and others require ballots to be mailed back.
