  4. Treasurer

We thank all those who came forward to present themselves as candidates. See their names and statements below.

Election Process

At the meeting, the four offices will be elected one by one, in the order shown above. For offices with zero nominees (only), nominations for office may be made from the floor, as write-in candidates. All candidates will be given five minutes to address the members.

List of Candidates

Office: Chair (1)

Zachary Bailey
My name is Zachary Bailey and I am nominating myself to be the chair of the Zürich chapter of Democrats Abroad Switzerland. I wish to help further our goals as a party and fight for the many issues that face both our country and the world. The recent election and the global pandemic have laid bare the fragility of our political, public health and social welfare institutions to this time of great upheaval. As chair of the Democrats Abroad in Zürich, I can help organize around those issues that are both close to me, and the issues that are close to other members of our chapter.

Office: Vice Chair (1)

Karen Herzog
I am interested in the Vice Chair role. I have been in Switzerland for 25 years. My husband is Swiss and we live outside of Winterthur. I have two teenagers. I have worked for many years in the Pharma industry for large multi-national companies and smaller ones in the compliance area ( financial and anti-bribery). I have lived in many places in the US, but am registered in Wisconsin as this is where I grew up. I am as well a Swiss citizen and speak fluent German at a C1-2 level. I have been in contact with the Dems Abroad last year because I was facing some issues with obtaining my absentee ballot. The group was extremely helpful and I did assist with some last minute mailings. I would like to be involved as I see now that this dedicated group can make a difference. I am also very impressed that Dems Abroad also has a voting bloc represented in the electoral process.

Office: Secretary (1)

Jenifer Kechulius
My name is Jenifer Kechulius and I am interested in the open secretary position with Democrats Abroad Zurich. While in college and grad school I held the positions of secretary, president, and treasurer of various student groups (this gave me my first experiences taking minutes for meetings). More recently I have held positions  as the program director of a private music school, the executive director of a chamber orchestra (ran monthly board meetings), and I am currently the administrative assistant for a music festival in Austria. I have a lot of experience with organizational and secretarial tasks from these positions.

Office: Treasurer (1)

Chi Tran Brändli
I’m a Vietnamese American, who was born in Vietnam but grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area since I was 8 years old. I graduated UC Berkeley with a major in immunology. I got a Masters in Economics from the University of St. Gallen after moving here with my Swiss husband. I’m a portfolio manager/equity analyst at a private bank. I’ve been living in Zurich since 26 years and have two teenage daughters.

We will be electing our leaders for 2021 - 2023; they will guide us through our local chapter events leading up to the 2022 Midterm Elections. This will be a crucial period of creating and executing policy during the first half of President Biden's first term in office and we want your input!

The online meeting will start at 18:30 PM and will last a maximum of 2.5 hours.

RSVP on this page for the meeting details.

Zurich Chapter Call for Candidates 2021

The Zurich Chapter of DA Switzerland (DACH) will hold its Annual Chapter Meeting online on Wednesday, 14th April 2021, when we’ll elect our new Chapter Committee. We seek candidates to stand for the four committee positions of Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer.

DACH and the Zurich Chapter have a long history of helping many Americans vote from abroad, working to build a broad member base, and hosting different events to increase community and socio-political knowledge among Americans in the Zurich region.

Let’s continue this journey together as an active chapter. There will be plenty of opportunities for any member to get involved. If you are motivated to take a leadership role in getting out the American vote in Switzerland, helping affect change in US legislation, and increase awareness of social causes, please consider running for a Chapter office!

The four committee positions are described below. Each officer is elected for a two-year term. To nominate yourself or someone else, please write the Zurich Chapter Nominations Committee at [email protected]. Include the name, address, telephone number and email address of the candidate, plus the position desired and a brief statement of intent. Nominations should arrive by end of day, Wednesday, March 10th 2021.

If you are interested in volunteering now but not in seeking a position, please don’t hesitate to complete our volunteer sign-up form or contact Liz Voss, DACH Vice Chair, at [email protected].

Please note: During the term of 2019-2021, three people chose to evenly divide the responsibilities of Chair, Vice-Chair, and Secretary among themselves. • Coordinate with other leaders and volunteers to assist the event managing and fundraising activities of the chapter
  • Coordinate with DACH GOTV for membership and voter outreach in the Swiss regions where no chapter is yet established

☆ Vice Chair

  • Assist the Chair in all Zurich chapter activities

  • Attend DACH ExCom meetings in the absence of the Chair
  • Participate in key discussions and decisions as part of the Leadership Team

☆ Secretary

  • Distribute meeting agendas, take minutes of all meetings, and distribute to the Chapter Committee and DACH ExCom
  • Maintain files and administrative records of the chapter (Google Drive)

  • In collaboration with event organizers and any respective committee members, ensure event publicity (social media, DACH website, print, etc)
  • Work to boost DACH Zurich’s social media presence in collaboration with appropriate committee members or event organizers
  • Participate in key discussions and decisions as part of the leadership team

On August 18, 2020 at 7 PM, Democrats Abroad Switzerland held the first of two events in Zürich this month, honoring the centennial of women’s suffrage in the United States. This small outdoor event took place in the park between Badenerstrasse and Zweierstrasse, 8004 Zürich, near Stauffacher. It brought together American and Swiss women, including several political office holders, to honor this moment. Next year will be the fiftieth anniversary of the Frauenstimmrecht in Switzerland. This event brought American and Swiss women together for this reason.

On August 18, 1920, the Tennessee legislature voted in Nashville, the state capital, to ratify the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, becoming the 36th and final state necessary to guarantee voting rights for women after a hard-fought battle that lasted 72 years. Bells rang all over the country when the news reached them, to celebrate. Ironically, in Nashville, no bells rang.

This month, to commemorate the centennial of this event, there were bells ringing at noon in Nashville TN. At the same time, at 7 PM in Zürich, a small group of Swiss and American activists came together at an outdoor event to ring their own bells and state what voting rights mean to them as women and citizens of two of the oldest existing democracies.

The event followed this plan:

  • 19.00: Welcome and forming the circle of participants around the life-size bronze figure “Frau 1928” by the Swiss artist Alis Guggenheim
  • A brief historical input about the events leading up to the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution culminating in confirming voting rights for women on August 18, 1920 in Nashville, Tennessee, presented by the American, Zürich-based historian Dr. Maura Doherty
  • Brief statements by each of the Swiss and American women in the circle on “what the right to vote means to me”
  • Ringing bells by the participants, this will be simultaneous with people and institutions in Nashville, TN (noon, August 18)
  • Closing remarks c. 20.00

Meet Your DACH Zurich Leaders! #DemsAbroadDay

Hello! Happy Saturday and Democrats Abroad Day!

This is the second annual DA Day, which celebrates all our members and what we do to excite and motivate voters around the world.

In honor of our day, we would like to introduce you to some of our leaders for the 2019-21 term!

You can learn more about all of our Zurich leaders here and check out our nationalBasel, and Geneva leaders as well!

DACH Zurich Potluck Picnic

The new DACH Zurich leadership was psyched to welcome our members to a potluck picnic as our first chapter meeting! The food was great (and plentiful - very American) and the company was even better! Please join us at our August meeting!

DACH Zurich Democratic Debate Watch Party

This was a great event which inspired a lot of discussion among the attendees. We were disappointed in the short 15 second answer times available to the candidates. We felt the candidates weren't able to give much substance in such a short time.

The food and company were top notch, however, and we hope you can join us for our next watch party!
