This is a call to arms across color, gender, and generation: pick up the fight or live with the consequences.
I’ve often wondered why any Black woman would take offense at being called an angry Black woman. More than that, I’ve wondered why white women, Indian women, Latino women, Asian women—or any woman—wouldn’t be angry.
That was then—when things were “not so bad.” Or at least that’s what we thought. Back then, we didn’t have the internet shoving the truth in our faces: child marriages, rapes, violence, and systemic disrespect for women—their choices, their bodies. Now it pops up on your phone in real time, every day.
And to put it bluntly—Houston, we have a major problem.
Here’s the thing: the rejection of that label wasn’t about being overly sensitive. It’s because it was a label, not a title. And labels are meant to box you in. Titles you earn; labels are thrown at you. Words matter.
I never wanted to join a “Women’s Caucus.” Too often, it felt like a white girls’ club—even when other women of color were in the room. I couldn’t put my finger on it, but it was there. Still, the issues were real, and I tried to focus on that. Because for me—whether it’s women’s issues, Black/Latino/Asian/Native American issues, LGBTQ+ issues, or gun violence—it all boils down to human rights.
And as a Black woman speaking for myself, I can say this: it’s not just anger. It’s exhaustion. I am tired of being tired.
I’m 76 years old, and I’m calling on the youth—Gen Z, Millennials, whatever label you wear—to get up, step up, speak up, and act up. Get your warrior on. Stop numbing yourself with games and Netflix. And Baby Boomers? Stop wringing your hands.
I’m still willing to get back up and get back out there. I won’t leave the younger generation “in Stich,” as they say in Germany—out on a limb. But we need intergenerational power. We need it now.
Join the Resistance.
Resist giving up.
Resist giving in.
Resist believing this will “blow over.”
Because when I’m gone, you’ll still be here—living with the consequences of inaction. History will not forgive your silence.
Don’t become a Handmaid’s Tale.
