GWC August 2025 Newsletter

LETTER FROM THE CHAIR

Greetings, Women Caucus members:

This is my first newsletter as the Chair of DA’s Global Women’s Caucus, so let me start by introducing myself. My name is Sally, and I was born in Brooklyn, produced television shows for 25+ years, and moved to Portugal in 2022. I care deeply about the state of the world, and I am convinced that women will be the engine to power the resistance.

I am writing to share my early vision for the Caucus moving forward. But first, I’d like to acknowledge the amazing leadership of Ann Hesse, who navigated a path through Covid, Trump 2.0, and the disastrous rollback of our reproductive freedoms. I’m collaborating closely with her on this transition. We have many ideas, and I share Ann’s commitment to driving change and the firm belief that women are strong, nimble, organizational masters with unique capabilities to mobilize and lead. (Please note I am not gendering the Women’s Caucus. For me, “Women” is a bit like the concept of God - it can mean whatever you identify with and is all-inclusive.)

At this moment, there are too many forces across the globe working hard to snuff out our fire. That’s why it’s time to redefine “women’s issues.” I firmly believe it’s ALL a women's issue: yes, the Equal Rights Amendment and reproductive freedom, but also healthcare, economics, climate, civil rights and gender equality. We are the best defenders of democracy writ large. Women care–about all of it.

We aim to promote the Global Women’s Caucus as a force for collective action and local leadership around the world. We will be altering our branding, voice and communications to reflect a need and desire for urgent actions, which will include a great focus on building and mobilizing trusted local communities to organize protests, boycotts, phone calls, and speakers. We want our work to get off-line so we can replace the hand-wringing with re-building democracy from the ground up.

Americans abroad are always talking about what we miss about the States. Many answers differ, but I know there’s one thing we would all miss if it went away: the right to vote from abroad. It’s being threatened already, and Ladies - this is also a women’s issue.

Consider this your formal invitation to join in the fight.

In Solidarity,
Sally DeSipio, DA Global Women's Caucus

INTERVIEWS NEEDED

If you are a woman between the ages of 16 and 35, or know someone who is, we would love to interview you about women’s issues, your frustrations, hopes and yes, fears, communication styles that resonate and those that don’t. The goal is to listen and learn, so we can fashion a women’s caucus that speaks to all generations.

NEWS LINKS

There are so many extraordinary females working indefatigably to shine a light on topics that impact our Constitutional rights, health, economic welfare, families, and planet. Each month, I will elevate thoughtful podcasts and articles about or by women that deserve our attention.

Ezra Klein: How the Attention Economy is Devouring Gen-Z - Ezra interviews Gen Z theorist, Kyla Scanlon in an illuminating interview.

Nicole Wallace: Brokenhearted but Showing Up Anyway - Nicole interviews Glennon Doyle and Abby Wambach about how putting our bodies into uncomfortable places is the antidote to the dehumanization of immigrants, and why fighting for democracy needs to be a team sport.

IN CLOSING

Women are in the majority - we are the 51%. We will speak boldly and act with precision. We work, we fight, we shine, and we raise our children. And we always leave time to dance.
