Position Overview

Democrats Abroad (DA) is seeking a dedicated and collaborative Home States Coordinator to lead and manage our Home States team.

The Home States Coordinator will lead a team of volunteers, each focused on a specific U.S. state. These volunteers are valuable resources and support for topics such as breaking news on legislation and litigation, issues affecting their state citizens abroad, and state specific voting processes not covered by VFA and FVAP. The Home States Coordinator will guide and support their work, ensuring their efforts are impactful and help fulfill DA’s strategic goals to mobilize voters, expand the electorate, and win elections. 

The Home States Coordinator works closely with the International Chair and Vice Chair and collaborates with the GOTV, Voter Assistance, Voter Protection, Communications, and Defending Democracy teams to bring state-specific expertise. 

The Home States team operates in alignment with the governance structures and electoral cycles of DA and the Democratic Party.  


Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership and Coordination

  • Manage Home State Leads—volunteers with deep knowledge and a strong connection to a specific state. 

  • Ensure effective communication and collaboration between the Home States Team and DA Global Teams.

  • Organize regular check-ins (at least monthly), as well as briefings and training sessions for Home State Leads to keep them updated and aligned with DA priorities.

Strategic Support and Collaboration

  • Coordinate with:

    • GOTV Team to identify and augment state-specific voter outreach strategies.

    • Voter Assistance Team to support voter help desk needs. 

    • Voter Protection Team to report state-specific voter protection cases and issues.

    • Defending Democracy Initiative (DDI) to track and provide relevant updates on state legislation and litigation.

    • DA Communications Team to contribute state-specific messaging and content to the Communications strategy and plans.

  • As requested by DA leadership, support collaboration with Democratic state parties. 

Outreach and Engagement

  • Establish a resource group to provide support to Country Committees (CCs) and Chapters in organizing local events that appeal to to increase member engagement and DA membership and encourage voting in all elections for which voters are eligible. Such efforts could include guidance and toolkits for state-themed engagement events and voter outreach.

  • Propose and support stateside outreach strategies aimed at increasing voter turnout and overseas voter awareness.

  • Organize opt-in affinity group gatherings. 

  • Serve as a conduit for any DA member who has strong in-state relationships they wish to bring to help mobilize US citizens to vote.  

Volunteer Management and Recruitment

  • Recruit volunteers with state expertise or those willing to develop it. 

  • Plan and organize state-specific and regional opt-in affinity group meetings. 

  • Ensure all Home State volunteers are properly trained, informed, and operating in line with DA policies and goals.


Agreements and Protocols

  • All communications or collaboration with state or local Democratic Party officials, candidates, or external organizations must be pre-approved by the Home States Coordinator and the DA International Chair.

  • Volunteers must follow DA’s Charter, Code of Conduct, Volunteer Norms, and Communications Guidelines.

  • Volunteers must sign the Democrats Abroad Confidentiality Agreement and Volunteer Norms.


Qualifications

  • Strong interest in U.S. state politics and overseas voter engagement

  • Demonstrated leadership and team coordination skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively across teams and with a diverse group of volunteers

  • Organized, proactive, and responsive to deadlines

  • Familiarity with Democrats Abroad or political/advocacy volunteer experience a plus

  • Must be an active DA member living abroad
  • Commitment to DA’s mission and Democratic values
