14 June Global Day of Defiance Events: Joburg

Democracy Braai – June 14
We may not be in the US, but that doesn’t mean we can’t show up for democracy. While military parades aim take center stage in DC, Americans across the US and around the world will be standing together in a Global Day of Defiance. In Joburg, we’ll mark the day in a way that truly reflects American values: with community, inclusion, and the courage to speak out.
Join Democrats Abroad South Africa for a Democracy Braai—a gathering that brings us together not just to share a meal, but to stand for the principles that unite us: justice, fairness, and respect for all.
Authoritarian displays don’t represent who we are. The real strength of a nation comes from its people—from citizens who care enough to speak up, show up, and stand together. On No Kings Day, we’re doing just that—joining voices around the world to say: democracy still matters, and we’re here to defend it.
Bring your friends, bring your inner fire, bring your appetite—for the braai and to call for change.
Please also bring:
- Beverages of your choice
- A salad, snacks or dessert to share
- Posterboard or cardboard to make signs for our Protest Garden
- US, SA, Pride and Juneteenth flags
- A cash contribution for extra hands to help out on the day (R50 suggested)
Thabo Kornegay, our new Vice Chair and host for this event, is involved in aquaponics & sustainable farming www.dotmarket.africa and will provide meat for the braai. You can check out his aquaponics concept tunnel at the house.
Let us know if you're available to help with set-up, clean-up or to pick up additional needs.
Photos: We will take photos to share online/publicly. You are welcome to let us know if you prefer not to be in photos. You can also choose to wear sunglasses or raise a sign in front of your face in group photos.
Please RSVP by mid-day Friday 13 June to receive further details and so we can prepare appropriately.
