In January, I was flying back to South Africa after a short visit in the US with my three kids. It was after the election but before the inauguration and I was still reeling from the eery silence about the election and what it meant. I felt alone and deeply disillusioned, yet motivated to continue the fight (as I have been in many other critical moments in our country). As I flipped through the movie options on the plane, I landed on I Am MLK Jr., a documentary that has been out since 2018 but that I hadn't watched yet. It could not have been better timing to watch this powerful film.
The documentary honours the life and legacy of MLK Jr through storytelling with historic videos that I had never seen before, audio recordings, photographs, and deeply personal interviews with his closest friends and other Civil Rights activists. I was moved to hear again his words and actions that galvanized a nation, along with the words of others who sacrificed so much at that time in history, and have not given up the tireless work of justice and racial equity.
There were other layers to his story that jumped out to me in a new way. There is so much else that one could say and reflect on from this film, but instead of sharing it here, my husband Mpho and I are hosting a movie and pizza night on Saturday evening, 20 September at 5:30 pm at our home in Johannesburg South.
