Democrats Abroad met with the Community at Car Free Day!
The Dems Abroad team had two amazing days of engagement with our Vancouver community as part of the Car Free Day events on Commercial Drive(9/5) and Main Street(9/13)! For Commercial Drive, we had a team roving through the event to share info with U.S. Expats and really let people know that we are in the community and available to assist U.S. citizens with the process for registering to vote in the upcoming U.S. elections. When it came to our event on Main Street, we went into overdrive! Here's some fun info to take away from the Main Street event:
- The Main Street event spanned 14 city blocks and had an estimated attendance of over 24,000 people
- 200 people came up to our Main Street booth to get assistance with registering to vote via VoteFromAbroad.org, to find out how to join Dems Abroad, and/or how to share info as allies in the community in order to help U.S. citizens know that they can vote
- Our 18-person volunteer teamed rotated between working the booth and sharing info up and down Main Street, having hundreds of interactions on top of what we had at our booth
- 13 people were inspired enough to register onsite and many more promised to do so at home.
Commercial Drive, while a smaller event, still allowed for a lot of engagement with the community and helped a great deal with information sharing. Many thanks to our 9-person volunteer team that spent the day canvassing the Drive to share voter registration info.
Since Car Free Day at Commercial Drive on 9/5, our DA chapter membership has gone up by 65 people and more seem to be joining each week. To put it in perspective, in 2024, the House majority was decided by just over 7,000 votes.
- Every new voter/member we help register could play a role in shaping the balance of power in Congress.
This is an exciting time with Democrats Abroad BC Mainland - when activation and mobilization increase and our connections with each other deepen.
Thank you to the entire team of amazing volunteers. Being on your feet for hours, bringing that much energy, creating such a great vibe, and having conversation after conversation takes a ton of effort! Everyone volunteer showed up in such a big way, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see all that effort translate into people taking action.
