Political Violence is Unacceptable

Charlie Kirk, a well-known conservative activist and staunch ally of President Trump, was shot and killed yesterday while speaking at a university. This appalling act of political violence is completely unacceptable.

Assassinations are not isolated acts. They create ripple effects that can destabilize entire societies. By turning individuals into martyrs or symbols, they deepen political and social divisions, ignite anger, and often lead to cycles of retaliation.

Kirk’s murder is part of a growing pattern of political violence. This rise is not happening in a vacuum — it is being accelerated by rhetoric and actions designed to divide us and amplified through social media and other platforms that reward outrage, misinformation, and dehumanization.

Our rhetoric matters. The words we use — whether in the media, in politics, or in everyday conversations — have power. They can escalate tensions or ease them. They can tear people apart or bring them together.

We reject violence — not only in action, but in language and intention. We reject the idea that harm is an acceptable form of political expression. We reject rhetoric that treats people as enemies instead of fellow human beings.

Now more than ever, we must stand together. We must insist on compassion that bridges differences, to protect democratic norms, and to build a culture where justice, dignity, and mutual care are the foundations of public life.

Democrats Abroad is working tirelessly to challenge hate, to defend democratic values through free and fair elections and to build a future rooted in justice, dignity, and shared humanity.

This work is not easy, but it is necessary. Our commitment to democracy remains steadfast and unwavering.
