Democrats Abroad Portugal has a banner year!

DA Portugal held a virtual meeting on December 14 to celebrate our group’s stunning growth and many successes over the past year. We also spent some time talking about our plans for 2021 and beyond.

Among EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Asia) groups in Democrats Abroad, DA Portugal was #1 in membership growth since January 2020, in member engagement, and in Vote From Abroad confirmed voters!

We also had a strong showing in phonebanking for Democrats Abroad campaigns, both for the general election and the Georgia special election. We held Global Presidential Primary ballot assistance events in 13 locations across Portugal. Our members helped one another figure out the ins and outs of voting from abroad, sent handwritten postcards to voters, and showed up for virtual and pre-pandemic in-person events.

We want to keep this momentum going throughout 2021 and beyond, and at our meeting we discussed what’s next for our group.

  • As an “out of compliance” country committee, our activities are somewhat constrained. The good news is that we can easily move forward to regain our official country committee status by nominating officers and holding an election in 2021.
  • Becoming a country committee again means that our members will be able to have more autonomy to organize, connect, and advocate!
  • There’s a lot of enthusiasm among our members for building upon our already strong momentum, mobilizing our amazing volunteers, and taking action towards reinstating DA Portugal as a full country committee within Democrats Abroad.

Please let us know if you have questions or if you’d like to help as we re-organize as a country committee. We plan to get a nominating committee up and running soon, and hold an annual meeting and elections in March 2021. Everyone’s input and participation are valuable, and there are big and small roles to fill! Please reach out to [email protected] if you’d like to learn more about how to help in this next phase.

We are excited for what the New Year will bring for DA Portugal, and we’ll be contacting our members soon with more information!
