Update on Protest Plans in Rome — March 28

Many people have asked about plans for a U.S. citizens’ protest in Rome set for March 28.

Unfortunately, we have not been able to obtain the required permit from the Questura di Roma. During the weekend of 28 March, several Italian groups are organizing a large multi-day demonstration under the banner “No Kings” (read more here), which appears to have exhausted available authorization for separate events.

Please note that this “No Kings” event is focused in part on Italian domestic politics, including opposition to the current government. Democrats Abroad cannot participate in activities tied in any way to the politics of our host country

Democrats Abroad Italy has contacted the organizers of No Kings to explore whether Americans might join the event in a personal capacity, but we have yet to receive a response.

For those of you who are interested in coming together to protest, one possibility is to join the  “No Tyrants” protest in Todi organized by Democrats Abroad Italy. This gathering is fully permitted and open to all.

We know many are disappointed that a Rome event isn’t possible at this time. Our priority is ensuring that all actions are safe, lawful, and consistent with our mission.
