State of the Union 2022: Building Back the Nation

Just confirmed – Congressman Eric Swalwell (CA-15) will speak at Democrat Abroad UK's post State of the Union event! Please RSVP below to join us via Zoom March 3 at 7pm.

Congressman Swalwell is a key member of the Democratic leadership in the House. He serves on the House Judiciary Committee, the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and House Homeland Security Committee. He is co-chair of the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, which makes committee assignments and sets the caucus' policy agenda.

Alongside Congressman Swalwell's valuable perspective, we'll have get in-depth analysis and commentary from Kate Cassling, Legislative Director for Sen. Hickenlooper and Steven Rosenfeld, a journalist focused on election administration and voting rights. (See bios below.)

President Biden will deliver his State of the Union address to Congress on March 1, two days before our event. We don’t know exactly what the president will say, but we can be sure that President Biden will meet the moment with his address. We can be sure that he will present the forward-thinking agenda that will build back America. We can anticipate that he will discuss the state of democracy at home and abroad.

Congressman Eric Swalwell

Congressman Eric Swalwell, 41, is serving his fifth term representing California’s 15th Congressional District in the East Bay near San Francisco. He serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, the House Committee on the Judiciary, and the House Committee on Homeland Security, and he is co-chair of the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee. He also is founding chairman of Future Forum, a group of young House Democrats focused upon outreach to millennials – the nation’s biggest, most diverse and best-educated generation. He earned his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Maryland and served as a county prosecutor and a city councilman before winning his House seat in 2012 by defeating a 40-year incumbent.

 

 


Steven Rosenfeld   Kate

Steven Rosenfeld

Steven Rosenfeld is the editor and chief correspondent of Voting Booth, a project of the Independent Media Institute, where he covers election administration and voting rights. He is a longtime democracy beat journalist and has reported for National Public Radio, Marketplace, and Christian Science Monitor Radio, as well as a wide range of progressive publications including Salon, AlterNet, BillMoyers.com, The New Republic, and many others. He has authored several election-related books; his recent articles appear on his website, https://votingbooth.media/. Steven also has worked on a handful of political campaigns and spent years covering Vermont politics. He was press secretary for Bernie Sanders’ 1990 congressional campaign, which first elected Bernie to the House. He spent a year covering the DNC Rules Committee, and he just helped the Atlanta NAACP write an oral history of the grassroots organizing behind 2020’s historic victories called The Georgia Way: How to Win Elections.

 

Kate Cassling

Kate Cassling is the Legislative Director for Senator John Hickenlooper (D-CO), overseeing his policy team and legislative agenda. She has worked on and with Capitol Hill as a policy advisor for more than 11 years. Prior to joining Team Hickenlooper, she worked in health advocacy at the Bipartisan Policy Center and before that worked for Senator Manchin, Congresswoman Titus, and Senator Collins. She has an MA in education from Tel Aviv University and a BA in Economics from Swarthmore College. She lives in DC with her husband and two daughters, Ellie & Diana.
