July DAA and NZ Book Club!

DA Australia-New Zealand Virtual Book Club:  The next Book Club will be on Tuesday 28 July at 8PM Sydney time.  The book for July is James Baldwin's If Beale St. Could Talk.  Barry Jenkins's film based on the book is also available via numerous streaming services.  

 

In the 1974 novel, If Beale Street Could Talk, Tish is nineteen years old and in love with Fonny, a young sculptor who is the father of her child. Tish and Fonny have pledged to get married, but when Fonny is falsely accused of a terrible crime, their families set out to clear his name and reunite the young lovers. The narrative, told from Tish's perspective as she becomes pregnant, follows her family's desperate fight against a racist justice system to prove Fonny's innocence, exploring themes of love, injustice, family, and systemic oppression.
