Speak out against an execution livestream
The Pentagon has announced plans to livestream the December 3 execution by firing squad of Nidal Hasan, who was convicted of killing 13 people in the 2009 attack at Fort Hood. The announcement would turn an execution into a broadcast available for the public to watch.
As of this morning, October 14, the livestream has not been publicly cancelled. Although President Trump and his advisers are reportedly considering whether to cancel or limit the broadcast, the Pentagon reaffirmed on Tuesday that it would proceed.
This is not who we are. We strongly oppose turning an execution into a public spectacle. This is a matter of human dignity and basic decency. Nothing excuses the horrific crimes committed at Fort Hood, and our thoughts remain with the victims, survivors, and their families. But broadcasting a person's death is not justice. It is a depraved spectacle, and it is hard not to see it as an effort to intimidate: to remind the public of the state's power over life and death. A government confident in its justice has no need to put an execution on display.
We do not have to choose between honoring the victims and rejecting cruelty. We can and must do both. Our opposition to a livestream does not diminish the gravity of the crimes or the suffering they caused. It reflects our conviction that a government should never turn killing into entertainment.
This Wednesday, contact your members of Congress
Please write to your two U.S. senators and your U.S. representative. Ask them to publicly oppose broadcasting the execution and to urge the administration to abandon the livestream. Find your Member of Congress here: Congress.gov | Library of Congress
Your message can be brief and personal. Here is a starting point:
I am a constituent living abroad, and I strongly oppose the proposed livestream of Nidal Hasan’s execution. Nothing excuses the crimes committed at Fort Hood, but broadcasting an execution is inconsistent with human dignity and basic decency.
Please publicly oppose this broadcast and urge the administration to abandon it. I would appreciate a response explaining your position and the steps your office will take.
This is not a request to excuse a crime or forget its victims. It is a request for our government to uphold a basic standard of humanity.
Every vote from abroad counts
Election Day is Tuesday, November 3. Calling and writing to your Members of Congress matters, but nothing speaks louder than our votes. The people who decide these questions are on the ballot, so make sure you're ready: request your ballot, return it now, and confirm it has been received and counted. Let us know when you've done so!
Close races are often decided by small margins, and overseas votes really can make the difference. Please take care of your ballot today, and remind your family and friends abroad to do the same.
If you have questions or need help, contact us at [email protected] or visit VoteFromAbroad.org.
Thank you for speaking up.
Warm regards,
