Düss-Ruhr Book Club (Banned Book Edition): Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller

This month, we will be reading Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller. Tropic of Cancer is an autobiographical novel by Henry Miller that is best known as "notorious for its candid sexuality", with the resulting social controversy considered responsible for the "free speech that we now take for granted in literature."

Listed on The Guardian's "100 Best Novels" list, this 1934 book has been banned in the US from 1934 to 1961 due to it's focus on subject of "life and love at the extremes of existence". George Orwell's commentary of the book (1940) included "I earnestly counsel anyone who has not done so to read at least Tropic of Cancer. With a little ingenuity, or by paying a little over the published price, you can get hold of it, and even if parts of it disgust you, it will stick in your memory ... Here in my opinion is the only imaginative prose-writer of the slightest value who has appeared among the English-speaking races for some years past.”

All readers are welcome. RSVP here to receive the meeting information!
