Chapter Leader: Courtney Newman
Voting State: Colorado
Seven years ago, I moved from Phoenix to Cologne to begin a master’s degree in environmental science—and to be closer to my partner (who is, of course, German!). I now work as a sustainability consultant, primarily on energy efficiency policy projects for the European Commission. My partner and I live in a beautiful Cologne Veedel with our two cats, Maja and Ruby.
In my free time, you’ll likely find me:
- Enjoying coffee or ice cream at a local café
- Running or watching ice hockey
- Spending time with good friends
My Journey with Democrats Abroad Germany
Since becoming a volunteer with Democrats Abroad Germany, my guiding goal has always been building community. I believe a strong, impactful, and joyful volunteer-run organization starts with connection.
That’s why I ran for Cologne-Bonn Chapter Chair—to strengthen the feeling of welcome, purpose, and shared energy among our members, and to make volunteering feel fun and meaningful.
What We’re Doing in Cologne-Bonn
Our chapter has long had a strong foundation of dedicated members. But there’s so much more potential to grow and connect. Here are just a few of the events we’re proud of:
- 🟦 Monthly meetups in Cologne and Bonn
- 📚 Quarterly book club gatherings
- 🗳️ GOTV tabling in both cities
- ✉️ Postcard coloring events
- 🌈 And our biggest success: CSD participation!
With the support of our fantastic Chapter Board, I’m excited to continue growing this community and expanding outreach in places like Aachen and Leverkusen.
Why I Volunteer
Because I believe in people power. Because democracy is something we do together. And because when we connect with each other, we build more than votes—we build belonging.
My Favorite Quote
Here’s a nice quote from Ruth Bader Ginsburg that I like: “Fight for the things that you care about. But do it in a way that will lead others to join you.” I think this is a very fitting quote on how I hope to lead as Chapter Chair :)
