Democracy Won Last Night - Thanks to You!

What a night for defending democracy and electing Democrats! Around the world, voters delivered a resounding message: Americans choose leaders who fight for us all.

Statewide Victories
In Virginia and New Jersey, Democrats made history. Abigail Spanberger became Virginia’s first female governor, running on a message focused on jobs, the cost of living, and support for women’s rights, while Democrat Mikie Sherrill won the NJ governor’s race with a message of affordability and standing strong against MAGA extremism.

State legislatures shifted blue too – voters built a Democratic super majority in New Jersey and broke the Republican super majority in Mississippi.

In Pennsylvania, voters also strengthened the Democratic position in the Keystone State. On the judicial front, three Democratic-affiliated justices of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, Christine Donohue, Kevin M. Dougherty and David N. Wecht were all retained by large margins, ensuring the court’s 5-2 Democratic majority was preserved.

Mayoral Races
In New York City, Zohran Mamdani won with over 50% of the vote in the three-way race against Cuomo and the Republican candidate. Mamdani tapped into people’s hunger for change and sent a message loud and clear: voters want leaders who stand up to Trump-era chaos and corruption.

In Cincinnati, Aftab Pureval secured re-election as mayor, defeating Cory Bowman, the half-brother of Vice President J.D. Vance. Despite the city’s official non-partisan mayoral contest, Pureval’s affiliation with the Democratic Party and the scale of his win underlined Democratic strength in urban centers. Bowman’s candidacy added a national-flavored contrast — a Republican-aligned challenger tied to a national figure, but Pureval held firm.

Ballot Measure Breakthroughs
In California, Proposition 50 passed with nearly 65% support, giving the state legislature the authority to redraw congressional districts and potentially flip up to five U.S. House seats. Governor Gavin Newsom celebrated the outcome as a “win for fair representation and working families,” marking a significant development that strengthens Democrats’ national position heading into 2026.

Meanwhile, in Maine, voters rejected Question 1 –  an anti-voting-access proposal pushed by conservatives — while approving Question 2, which expands the state’s “red flag” gun-safety law. Their decisions sent a clear message: protect voting rights and promote common-sense safety.

From city halls to statehouses, voters made it clear that America still believes in democracy and in leaders who fight for fairness, freedom, and the future. These victories are more than election results; they’re proof that organizing works, voices matter, and every vote truly counts.

As we look ahead to 2026, Democrats Abroad will keep doing what we do best: helping Americans around the world make their voices heard and democracy strong.
