Tax season is here. For us living abroad that often means stress and frustration accompanied by groans and four letter words. Filing from abroad is complicated and confusing and many members here in Skåne have questions about how and when to do it. They also want to know what is being done to change the tax laws that have negative consequences for expats.
With this in mind, we have organized our second annual tax seminar to help our members and other interested American citizens learn about how to comply with their tax obligations while living abroad and how the Democrats Abroad Taxation Task Force has been working the doors in Washington DC and advocating for change.
On May 1st at 18:00, Ari Propis CPA and DA Taxation Task Force member Deedee Gierow, will present a tax seminar for DA Skåne Members and interested american citizens here in Malmö.
Ari is the President of Propis and Company- a boutique accounting firm specializing in tax preparation and tax planning for expatriate Americans. Licensed as a Certified Public Accountant in the state of Florida (since 2005) with over ten years of U.S. tax compliance and advisory experience, he not only guides his accounting firm, but he also provides planning and consulting services to businesses and individuals.
Ari's many years spent as the senior U.S. expatriate tax manager for BDO and with his own firm has earned him a broad level of expertise that enables him to provide expert guidance in all areas of tax preparation and planning for expatriates. Driven by his own experiences living outside the US, Ari enjoys guiding American expats through the challenges of living abroad.
Our DA tax advocacy representative Deedee Gierow will help us understand the expat tax situation better, and explain the reform efforts by the Democrats Abroad Taxation Task Force. She will also discuss the results of the DA tax survey and our efforts in Washington to change how Americans overseas are treated by the IRS.
The Democrats Abroad Taxation Task Force (TTF) was formed to 1) research U.S. tax policy as it affects Americans living outside the U.S. and 2) consider, develop and execute initiatives aimed at enacting reforms that resolve adverse impacts.
It is committed to Residency Based Taxation as a remedy to address the vast majority of the tax problems faced by Americans abroad.
Further, it promotes:
the elimination of FATCA reporting for the accounts of Americans abroad,
the repeal of the Windfall Elimination Provision,
an exemption for American business owners abroad from the transition taxes in the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, and
a citizenship remedy for "accidental Americans".
This event will will take place on May 1st at 18:00 in Malmö at “Ungdomens hus” on Norra Skolgatan 10b in “Sal 4”. Coffee and snacks will be provided.
Make sure to reserve yourself a spot by RSVPing to this event as seating is limited.
See you there!
Democratically yours,
Alexander and Beth
