As part of American Memorial Day commemorations, there is an important series of ceremonies taking place in the Tarn over the weekend of June 1 and 2. You are invited to attend. (NOTE: a message from DA had the WRONG DATE for the events. Apologies. These are the correct dates.)
The events honor two OSS special forces commandos killed in action in August 1944 near the little hamlet of Le Rialet in the Monts de Lacaune. They provided vital help in the Liberation of the region and blew up an important railroad bridge near Mazamet, preventing Nazi forces from rushing to Provence to counter the major Allied landings of Aug 15, 1944.
Family members related to the men who fought and died are traveling from the USA to attend.
The presence of the American community is desired too.
Perhaps the most exciting element will be a parachute drop Sunday morning in homage to the Allied soldiers who parachuted in behind enemy lines at midnight, by moonlight, at low altitude.
If you are interested, contact Meredith Wheeler for the full agenda of the two-day event.
There are lunches on both Saturday and Sunday that you are welcome to join. They cost 25 euros--but you need to book in advance.
