Global Press Coordinator


About the Position

Democrats Abroad (DA) was the margin of victory for Joe Biden in Georgia and Arizona, and we’re determined to continue delivering scale-tipping votes in races across the United States in 2022. The Global Press Coordinator will play a critical role in achieving this aim by leading global press initiatives designed to raise DA’s profile and ultimately drive ballot requests and returns among the larger U.S. population abroad. A successful Global Press Coordinator should have comprehensive knowledge of U.S. politics, U.S. and international media landscapes, and the U.S. population abroad.

Upon appointment, and in collaboration with the International Chair, the Global Press Coordinator will identify at least six additional DA volunteers to serve on the Global Press Team. The Global Press Coordinator will lead this Team in creating and implementing a proactive global strategic press plan for 2022 that will guide global-level press engagement as well as supplement and support DA country committees in their national-level efforts.

 

Responsibilities

  • Motivate, lead, and delegate tasks (develop and distribute talking points, draft and distribute press releases, track media appearances, etc.) among the Global Press Team
  • Hold regular Global Press Team meetings
  • Create a proactive global strategic press plan for 2022
  • Actively seek out and act upon press opportunities for DA
  • Build and maintain relationships with DA leaders at the country level, especially country chairs and country press coordinators
  • Organize press training sessions for DA leaders periodically through the 2022 midterms
  • Work with DA Advocacy Coordinator to develop and launch tailored press campaigns
  • Compile, maintain, continue building a centralized comprehensive list of all DA press contacts
  • Archive DA press activities, articles, and interviews in a centrally accessible location
  • Stay current with the latest best practices, trends, and platforms in U.S. and international media landscapes
  • Build and maintain relationships with journalists based in the U.S. and abroad
  • Collaborate with the Democratic National Committee (DNC) Press Team
  • Work closely with the Global Social Media and Internal Communications Coordinators to ensure coherent, consistent, and effective messaging
  • Report to DA International Executive Committee members on a bi-weekly basis and regularly attend their meetings 

 

Skills & Qualifications

  • Commitment to helping DA, the Democratic Party, and Democratic candidates succeed
  • Member of Democrats Abroad (join here)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of press strategies employed in political contexts
  • Strong familiarity with U.S. and international media landscapes
  • Deep first-hand knowledge of the U.S. voting constituency abroad, as well as of issues unique to overseas voters
  • Ability to generate innovative ideas to better help overseas voters, as well as to motivate and oversee teams that see them through
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends as needed
  • Ability to manage multiple projects across multiple time zones
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines
  • Highly communicative and responsive to internal and external requests
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Proven experience in successfully pitching stories to journalists and/or working with journalists to provide quotes and background materials to develop a story
  • Proven ability to speak on the record 

 

Logistical Details

Location: Online

Estimated Time Commitment: 15-20 hours per week, with the understanding that this will likely increase during peak election months (September-November 2022)

Language: English; written and spoken working proficiency in at least one other language advantageous

Start Date: Flexible

End Date: May 2023

Compensation: Unpaid (but tremendously rewarding!)
