The biggest sleeper issue in American politics? The fight for control of state governments. Extreme “stand-your-ground“ laws and de facto abortion bans are decided in state capitals, not Washington, DC. So, too, are voting rights, polling places, and vote certification. State legislatures are ground zero in the fight for democracy — and Republicans control 62 of 99 chambers.
How did it get this way? What will it take to change the balance of power in state legislatures? Which chambers are competitive in November‘s midterm elections?
