    Restoring American Democracy Policy Forum

Policy Forum on Restoring American Democracy and U.S. Leadership

On Sunday, October 20th, 2019, all wings and methodologies of the Democratic Party are coming together for a policy forum hosted by Democrats Abroad Japan (DAJ) for any and all Americans living overseas.

The Policy Forum on Restoring American Democracy and U.S. Leadership will feature 4 speakers, including former leaders in the United States Government and the Democratic Party Committee Abroad (DPCA), who will comment on the direction of key issues that are bound to affect all Americans.

This event shall serve as the beginning of our platform discussion in Democrats Abroad Japan, and our leadup to the 2020 National Convention. Each speaker will be addressing a topic for 15-20 minutes as described below. Afterwards, the audience in the room will be allowed to ask questions and follow-up, time permitting.

The event will be moderated by John Baumlin, Chair of Democrats Abroad Japan.

    Speakers

    Ambassador Robert Orr

Former United States Ambassador to the Asian Development Bank
Speaking On: How to Rebuild International Relations After the Trump Era

The Trump Administration’s repudiation of the international institutions and alliances which underpin the world order, built by the U.S. and its key allies in Asia and Europe, has damaged them and U.S. standing and reputation. What are the urgent steps needed to restore U.S. leadership and rebuild diplomacy and peace?

    Gordon Gaul IV

DA Progressive Caucus Co-Chair & DAJ DPCA Rep
Speaking on: Building a Grassroots Movement that Outweighs Corporate Influence

A fundamental restructuring of the financing of U.S. elections is needed, if we are to right the ship of American Democracy. What practical actions can get us there?

    Cheryl Okubo

    Climate Change Activist
Speaking On: Global Climate Change -- What Democrats Can Do About It

5000 marched in Japan among the millions world-wide on Sept 20th, and Greta Thunberg of Sweden fiercely condemned inaction at the U.N. It seems as if we may finally be reaching a political tipping point. What are the prospects for practical policies on climate change?

    Tom Schmid, J.D.

Former DA International Counsel and Chair of DAJ
Speaking on: The Supreme Court: A Failed Institution (and Ideas for Fixing It)

Filling the judiciary with G.O.P. partisans is key to the Republican strategy of minority rule in the face of demographic change. Many on the Left are calling for radical solutions. What is the best way forward?
