Please join us for the star-studded UK premiere of Supreme Court drama Miranda’s Victim.

About the Film

You have the right to remain silent.

Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.

You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford one, one will be appointed to you.

From NYPD Blue to The Practice to Law and Order, most of us have seen enough police procedurals to quote a basic Miranda Warning by heart. 

Drawn in by these taught, gritty dramas, we’re often given a bird’s-eye view of the hardworking detectives and prosecutors who labour behind-the-scenes to build trial-ready cases. Piecing together evidence from crime scenes, investigators, witnesses - and sometimes even incriminating statements from defendants themselves - there’s just one chance to get it right. 

The key to courtroom admissibility and often with the prosecutor’s case in the balance - whether (or not) defendants were duly informed by police of their statutory rights at the time of arrest and before any statements were taken.

That's the legacy of the 1966 Supreme Court ruling on Miranda v. Arizona.

To understand how these fundamental rights came to be enshrined, we have to go back to 1963 when things were…different.

Based on true events, Miranda’s Victim tells the story of a woman who changed America’s legal system forever.

In 1963 eighteen-year old Trish Weir was kidnapped and sexually assaulted. Her assailant Ernesto Miranda is caught and tried. But after he confesses without legal representation and is granted a retrial, it triggers a legal proceeding that forever changes the nation's justice system.

Proceeds from this event will provide essential funds for DAUK’s get-out-the-vote work, including a campaign office, phone- and text-banking, postcarding and voting assistance throughout the critical 2024 election cycle, with democracy itself at stake.
