Vote from Norway

Request your ballot - go to votefromabroad.org and follow the steps to request your ballot. Ask to have your ballot sent to you by email.  If you need help with requesting your ballot, email [email protected] 

If you have already requested your ballot this year go to step 1 below.

1. Get your ballot - states are required to send out ballots 45 days before each election.  Check your email for your ballot starting on September 19th. If you don’t see your ballot, be sure to check your spam folder and your trash folder to make sure it’s not in one of those. Also be sure to check your regular mail if you did not request that your ballot be sent by email. If you still have not received a ballot, contact your Local Election Official (LEO) and let them know (find all of your state’s information including your LEO here). 
   
   
2. VOTE your ballot! - Depending on the state you vote in, you may be able to return your ballot online, or you may have to print out your ballot to fax or mail it back. Your ballot should come with instructions on how to fill it out and send it in. 3. Return your ballot - If you live in a state where you can return your ballot by email, you should choose this option.  If you live in a state where you have to mail or fax your ballot back, please see more detailed information below. (You can find all of your state’s information including your LEO here).
   • States where you can FAX your ballot include Alaska, California, Florida, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. You can use free or inexpensive services such as FaxZero, FaxPlus, HelloFax, Browserfax (for Google Chrome), or CocoFax, or use an email-to-fax app like GeniusFax.
   • New Jersey voters can email or fax your ballot back but you must also mail your ballot back to your LEO.
   • 19 states and Puerto Rico require you to mail your ballot back. Follow the instructions sent with your ballot carefully to make sure you fold it, sign it, and send it back correctly. If you do not have a printer, your local library will likely have a printer for you to use at an affordable price in order to print your ballot. Once you have printed your ballot, voted your ballot, and assembled the ballot to send back to the US, you can send it via Posten, via courier service, or via the diplomatic pouch from the US Embassy in Oslo.
     • Recommended by DAN: If you mail your ballot back via Posten, make sure you affix the correct Norwegian postage to the envelope for the size and weight of the envelope you are sending (international stamps for a letter sized envelope [B5 size] are 44 NOK and stamps for large envelopes [B4 size] are 74 NOK.) Mail to the US is taking approximately 2-3 weeks from Norway currently, so fill out and send in your ballot as soon as you receive it.
     • If you send your ballot via Courier, be sure to check with your Local Election Official to determine the correct mail delivery address as many couriers will not deliver to PO Boxes.
     • If you want to send your ballot back through the US Embassy Diplomatic Pouch, (not recommended by DAN) you have to drop off your ballot in person at the Embassy in Oslo and it can take 4-6 weeks to get it back to your LEO. Please see the US Embassy In Norway’s website for more instructions.
4. Even before you get your ballot on September 19, you can fill out and submit a backup ballot to your LEO. Instructions for voting a backup ballot can be found here at the Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot site. Because of the increasing unreliability of postal mail in both the U.S. and abroad, and due to Republican efforts to suppress legitimate voting at the state and federal levels, Democrats Abroad strongly encourages filling out a backup ballot. You can fill one out at any time; you don’t need to wait until September 19th. If you are concerned about your ballot making it back to your LEO in time to be counted, a backup ballot provides an extra layer of protection for your vote.
   
   
5. BUT WAIT, you’re not done yet! Check the status of your ballot - Go to Track Your Ballot on your state’s website or contact your Local Election Official to make sure that your ballot has arrived and has been counted by the LEO as received. (You can find all of your State information including your LEO here).  If it has arrived and been certified as received then you are done - thank you for voting!
