The Democrats Abroad (DA) delegation this week proudly joined representatives from US states and territories in nominating Vice President Kamala Harris as candidate of the Democratic Party for President, the first Black woman ever chosen by a major party to run for the nation’s top office. They also joined in the nomination of Governor Tim Walz from Minnesota for Vice President.
“America, hope is making a comeback,” former First Lady Michelle Obama told an exuberant audience at the Democratic Convention. That was evident in the excitement that emanated from the attendees at the conference, including the 27 member Democrats Abroad delegation led by International Chair Martha McDevitt-Pugh.
Democratic conventions are typically festive events, but this year’s may go down in history as one of the most joyous and hopeful for the future, a stark contrast to the dark, fearful and angry mood of the Republican National Convention last month.
“The energy and excitement of the DA delegation is off the charts,” said DA International Chair Martha McDevitt-Pugh. “The message of this convention is ‘do something;’ DA’s delegates are doing that every day here in Chicago. Our delegation is inspiring delegates and leaders across the 50 states and DC to reach out to Americans abroad from their state and register them to vote.”
During the day, delegates took part in caucus meetings and workshops and in the evening they participated in the formal nominating Convention itself.
The Democrats Abroad delegation, consisting of 13 ‘at-large’ delegates and others, is as diverse as America itself, comprising people with different identities, ages and abilities, and including LGBTQ+ and veterans and military family members. Delegation members live in 16 countries around the world and vote in 19 states. This includes eight battleground states, where these votes can be decisive. In 2020, Democratic voters abroad delivered the critical states of Georgia and Arizona for Biden-Harris.
